What to do at Arumeru River Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania Safaris

Nature Walks

  • Rainforest walk: This “bestseller” amongst our walks takes us on different routes across the indigenous rainforest at the foothills of Mt. Meru not far from the Lodge. Usually we can spot Blue Monkeys and rare Black and White Colobus Monkeys at close range. The beauty of the landscape is amazing. The pleasant climate and natural springs in the forest attract a great variety of butterflies and a rich birdlife, such as Ibis, Hornbill or Marabou Storks. The walk of approx. 2.5 hrs can be combined with a visit of the local market in a nearby village on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • Coffee walk: Ten minutes away from Arumeru River Lodge 20 coffee farmers have established a village cooperation that jointly processes their harvest and markets their coffee. The Coffee Walk starts at a missionary church and follows the beautiful banana and coffee fields of the village before it reaches the central coffee processing facility, where the main processes of coffee production are explained. After 2 hours the walk ends at the small coffee roasting facility. Here you can try the coffee right at the place of production. A walk that appeals to all senses.
  • Village walk: Get a flavor of the “Real Africa” in the neighborhood of our Lodge. This 2.5 h walk goes a bit beyond the Lodge and Safari car experience. It will take you right into the everyday reality of African life behind the scenes. Be prepared to walk on dusty tracks and pass by burning litter. But also be prepared for people that keep their incredible friendliness and optimism under circumstances that we might consider as hard to bear. Get insights into some grass root initiatives like the Usa River Children Center guided by one of our staff members who lives in that village.

Kiligolf Estate comprises an 18-hole championship golf course together with a real estate development, set within an area of outstanding natural beauty. The beauty of Tanzania’s northern highlands provides the spectacular setting for this estate, the newest and most striking addition to Africa’s great golfing estates. The estate is situated in 1,000 acres of African bush, approximately 25 minutes from Arumeru River Lodge and offers a combination of a spectacular golf course, amazing views of Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, and wildlife roaming free.

A visit to the vibrant Arusha Town

Arusha is the beating Safari heart of the Northern Circuit. Let’s be honest, the city is not exactly a romantic honeymoon destination. Some places, however, are worth visiting. Explore the city and its environment with your Private Driver Service.

  • The iconic “Cultural Heritage Center” hosts the largest gallery for contemporary African Art in Africa. This is a must-go for those who are interested in African art beyond souvenir shop art.
  • Sable Square Shopping Mall is a selection of shops and restaurants, all designed in Cape Dutch Architecture. This is an excellent spot to spend a relaxing hour in a very nice lush environment.
  • The central market provides the opposite experience: full, loud, smelling in places. This is very authentic, vibrant and safe.
  • Arusha boasts of nice garden restaurants (e.g. Blue Heron, Le Patio, and Fig & Olive) which are nice options for a light lunch (pizza and international dishes).

Half-day Horse Riding Safaris

Together with our partner organization we offer fascinating half-day horseback excursions in the African bush. The excursion will be adapted to the individual skills of the participants (from absolute beginners to experienced riders) and is accompanied by a professional guide. It starts 20 minutes away from our Lodge on the grounds of a huge private Estate where wildebeest, zebras and antelopes are roaming free. There are no predators on the grounds of the Estate. Enjoy the unparalleled experience of approaching wild animals on horseback in the most relaxing way.
