Location: Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania Safaris
Historic Gibb’s Farm is the perfect starting point for those looking to stay at Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania safaris. Situated on the slopes of Ngorongoro Conservation Area and only 30 minutes from Lake Manyara National Park, Gibb’s Farm provides easy access to explore Northern Tanzania’s national parks and abundant wildlife.
Gibbs’ Farm overlooks the centuries-old Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Forest. Nearby, Lake Manyara National Park is a beautiful, small park where one can spot baboons and elephants, and the occasional tree-climbing lion. Our night drive outing to the park is one of the best ways to observe rarely-seen nocturnal animals. Guided by park naturalists, your night of discovery is capped off with hot chocolate upon your return to the peacefulness and serenity of Gibb’s Farm.
Spoil yourself with one of the Maasai-inspired treatments in the spa, all of which use indigenous plants and shrubs – the Arabica coffee scrub is ideal for gentlemen guests!
Stroll through the Ngorongoro Forest with an indigenous Maasai healer, who will point out the more than 20 medicinal plants used at the Osero Clinic, the farm’s healthcare centre.
Indulge in afternoon tea in the garden, on your private veranda or in the main lodge – we recommend breaking with tradition just enough to enjoy a cup of the farm’s freshly ground Arabica coffee rather than tea!

What to do at Gibb’s Farm, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania Safaris
There is perhaps nothing grander than the peace and solitude of a walk or nature outing to restore one’s well-being and discover the wonders of a new environment. Gibb’s Farm offers many different walks, depending upon your interests and desired activity level.
Around the FarmExperience a real working farm as you explore our organic 10-acre fruit and vegetable gardens and 30-acre coffee fields. Try your hand at milking a cow and learn about our sustainable farming methods.
Garden Walk- Stroll through eight historic gardens with Horticulturist Lazaro Msasi Gwandu, who supervises the care of hundreds of species of flora, and Gardener Daudi, who tends to the aromatic herb garden. It is a tour through the natural history museum; many plants have been here since 1959, when Margaret Gibb, an avid gardener, planted the first seeds. This 40-minute leisurely walk is truly a breath of fresh air.
Indigenous Medicinal Walk- Indigenous Maasai healers lead you through the Ngorongoro Forest, where you will hear about Olemoran, Olaiyapiyap and Osinoni—just a few of over 20 medicinal plants described on the walk. Commonly used in Tanzania to treat health problems, these and other herbal medicines are used at Osero Clinic, the farm’s healthcare center.
Ngorongoro Forest Walk- A Gibb’s Farm naturalist is your guide for this tranquil two-hour walk through the farm and into the Ngorongoro Forest. Your senses will be alive with the sights and sounds of farm life, flora and fauna of the forest.
Community and Cultural Experiences
Artists-in-Residence- Through Gibb’s Farm’s artists-in-residence program, East African artists stay at the farm and create commissioned artwork. Meet some of East Africa’s most talented artists, learn about their influences and inspiration and watch them create their artwork, which is available for purchase.
Cultural Journey- Outing to Tloma, a nearby village, where you have the opportunity to meet a local family and learn about Iraqw culture and traditional ways of life. Discover the age-old process of making pots, try your hand at pounding grain and taste the local brew.
Helping Hands Safari- Get to know a culture and people while on safari by lending a helping hand for the communities that support your vacation or travel experience. Gibb’s Farm offers different opportunities to get involved, including:
School Desk and Furniture Carpentry- Contribute a few afternoons working alongside our farm carpenters to construct school furniture, distributed through the Karatu Education Fund. At area schools, three to four children typically share one desk, so new furniture is always appreciated. A very rewarding way to participate in village life and support children’s education.
Erosion Control Tree Planting- Hundreds of young tree saplings (predominantly native species) are grown on the farm as part of an effort to help control erosion and reforest the environment. Over the last 15 years, much of the farm’s estate forests have been restored through this program. Join us on an excursion to transport young trees from the farm nursery and plant them in community schoolyards and other environments.
Karatu Town Tour- A tour of Karatu, where you will visit various businesses such as the market, a local bar and hair salon, and observe daily life in this African town.
Tloma Primary School Visit- Meet the students and teachers at Tloma Primary School, and learn firsthand about the successes and challenges of education in rural Tanzania.
Safari Adventures and Active Experiences
Village Walk- This leisurely two-hour walk around our neighboring village of Tloma provides a personal look at Tanzanian village life. You will discover the true essence and traditions of rural East African village life.

Starting at Gibb’s Farm, you hike to the Ngorongoro Forest and ascend the slopes to the crater rim with magnificent views of the crater floor below. Walk availability is subject to track and weather conditions.
Waterfall/Elephant Caves Walk- On this two-hour hike through the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will discover a magnificent waterfall and incredible “elephant caves” created by elephants digging up the earth to ingest the vitamin-rich soil. You may see buffalo, bushbuck, waterbuck and baboons, also attracted by the soil.
Hippo Pools Sunset Safari Outing- After an early lunch, experience a guided afternoon drive through the famous Manyara National Park to see hippos gathered at sunset at the Hippo Pools. Enjoy drinks and snacks as you marvel at these magnificent creatures.
